history

Originally built in the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the Wenshu Monastery was called Xinjiang Temple. According to legend, a Buddhist monk settled there in 1681 during the reign of Emperor Kangxi ( Chinese  康熙,  Pinyin  KāngxīW.-G.  K'ang-Hsi) in the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), and when he was cremated the Manjushri ( Sanskrit : m., मञ्जुश्री,  MañjuśrīChinese  文殊, Pinyin  wén shūW.-G.  Wen-shuJapanese  MonjuWylie'jam dpal dbyangs ) appeared in the flames, whereupon the monk was believed to be his reincarnation . After that, the name was changed to Wenshu Monastery.

Cultural background

In addition to an eleven-story pagoda , the so-called peace tower in the temple section on the right, the library and a large collection of cultural antiquities make up the main image of the Wenshu monastery. Over 500 works of art have been stored here since the Tang and Song dynasties . In the so-called sutra conservation room ( Sanskrit सूत्र - “thread”, “chain”, more precisely: teaching text in verse), many well-known, handwritten exhibits, works of art and paintings have been restored to date. Some well-known Chinese artists and scholars who contributed to the collection include Zhang Daqian , Zheng Banqiao, and Feng Zikai . Most valuable for the collection, however, is a skull fragment of the famous Buddhist pilgrim monk of the Tang Dynasty, Xuanzang . The monastery also owns a jade Buddha statue that was brought to China on foot by Xing Lin from Burma ( Myanmar ) in 1922 . It is said that some of the sutras on display were written in the 18th century by three Buddhist monks with the blood of the tips of their tongues. Last but not least, the monastery houses around 300 different Buddha statues made of various materials, such as B. wood, stone, iron, but also jade, many of them are richly decorated and variously decorated.

The Wenshu Monastery is also known for its tea gardens and solemnly decorated halls.
