Wenceslas Church

The Wenceslas Church ( Kostel svatého Václava ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the South Moravian town of Břeclav ( Lundenburg ). It is located on nám. TG Masaryka 8 ( the former town square ) and belongs to the Břeclav deanery of the Brno diocese . The church is dedicated to St. Wenceslas .

history

The previous Baroque church around 1900

As excavation finds showed, a Romanesque church from the half of the 11th century already existed at the site. A Gothic church was replaced by a new baroque building in 1756. From the second half of the 19th century, preaching in Czech was used in the Wenceslas Church, but in German in the Kyrill and Method Church , which was newly built in 1856 . During the Second World War, when Lundenburg was part of the German Empire, the church was destroyed by an air raid on November 20, 1944. After the end of the communist regime, it was decided in 1990 to rebuild the church and at the same time to give the city a prominent center again. The present church was built between 1992 and 1995 according to the plans of the architect Ludvik Kolek from Brno, not without prior archaeological excavations of the previous Romanesque church.

Building description

The interior of the church

The nave and a prayer room meet in the presbytery , which is located directly under the tower. The roof horizontal merges into a dominant three-part vertical, which can be seen as a symbol of the Trinity . A large cross crowns the tower.

Inside, on the front wall of the presbytery, the image of the murdered St. Wenceslaus can be seen, a copy by Jana Lukešová after Peter Johann Brandl . The baroque gold frame dates from the late 17th century from Prokop's Church in Prague, which was blown up in 1962. The main altar and ambo were designed by the sculptor Karel Stádník and made by Petr Váňa. The baroque tabernacle comes from Chomutov . Abstract glass windows by Milan Drábek and Zdeněk Čap depict the creation of the cosmos and the earth. Another four glass windows by Karel Rechlík show the baptism of Christ in the Jordan, the Descent from the Cross, angels at the Last Judgment and the resurrection. The cross above the altar and a statue of the Madonna are copies of Gothic works.

Under the church there are parish rooms and the remains of Romanesque walls of the medieval church. A photo exhibition documents the development of the church over the centuries.
