The museum is located on the corner of Veerhaven and Willemskade in the former clubhouse of the royal yacht club. The building dates from 1851 and was built in 1852 by King Wilhelm III. solemnly opened. Since then, Rotterdam collectors and scientists have bequeathed art and everyday objects of cultural and historical value to the yacht club, which were exhibited there.

After the death of Prince Heinrich von Oranien-Nassau in 1879, the president of the yacht club, the building was sold to the city of Rotterdam, which set up a municipal museum there in 1885: the "Museum of Agriculture and Ethnology", which later briefly called "Museum of Ethnology".

The collection of art and everyday objects from cultures around the world grew more or less by chance with the collection items that Dutch missionaries, sailors, soldiers and merchants brought with them as souvenirs or trophies from around the world. To create more space for this, the building was extended by an additional floor in 1910. Under the direction of Jan Willem van Nouhuys (museum director 1915–1934), who worked as a researcher and expedition participant in New Guinea , the exhibition was modernized in a scientific way. It grew to around 110,000 cataloged articles and 100,000 photos and slides.

In 2000 the building was completely renovated and the museum got its new name: Wereldmuseum Rotterdam . On June 15, 2001, Stanley Bremer was appointed director. The museum had a total of 83,400 visitors in 2014, 41,377 of them paying and 41,877 non-paying.

In April 2015, the museum hit the headlines after a study by the municipality of Rotterdam showed that the museum was in a "downward spiral" (Dutch: "negative spiral"). It paid too much attention to commercial activities, such as hospitality, while the museum's collection, which is 80 percent owned by the city, was barely displayed. It was also criticized that it no longer had an effective control body. As a result of a court decision, the municipal council was given the opportunity to perform a function on the supervisory board. The new chairman of the supervisory board initially campaigned for Stanley Bremer to remain in office for the time being, but his resignation as director was announced on April 24, 2015. Jan Willem Sieburgh was appointed interim director on May 15, 2015 . He had previously been the interim director of the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam in 2013 . Before that he was managing director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam from 2002 to 2010 .
