Workpiece conveyor

A workpiece conveyor or conveyor is a machine for moving workpieces from a first location to a second location.

When transporting workpieces , i.e. the workpiece carrier systems or transfer systems, a distinction is made between classic conveyor belts and intelligent transport systems (see also conveyor technology , conveyor system ).

A classic conveyor belt is used for traction systems. These are subdivided into chain systems and single or double belt systems. The functionality of the two is comparable. The workpiece, usually attached to a plate provided for this purpose, the so-called workpiece carrier plate, is placed on the conveyor belt and pulled through the individual processes or stations. This can be done either synchronously , i.e. one station after the other, or asynchronously . With asynchronous transfer, bypasses are used to divide the route from time-critical processes so that several such processes can take place at the same time. The cycle time, which is always based on the slowest process, can thus be reduced.

A highly engineered form of workpiece carriers are those with their own drive. One speaks here of intelligent transport systems. They are primarily used in asynchronous assembly systems or in intralogistics. In contrast to the classic conveyor belt, the workpieces here travel on self-propelled drive units, so-called shuttles. These move through the individual process stations on a monorail system. The driving units can communicate with the route via infrared . You can set the points and crossings yourself and find your next destination autonomously.

Autonomous driving using floor vehicles with their own drive and reliable positioning on a grid on a defined level allows chaotic control in a workshop production. Such solutions are all specially configured. They are offered by various manufacturers. An industrial standard is not yet known.
