Workshop Building (Grangemouth Dock)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The workshop building at Grangemouth Dock was one of the port and dock facilities in the Scottish town of Grangemouth in the Council Area of Falkirk . It is one of the few remaining 19th century harbor buildings in Grangemouth. The exact year of construction is not known. On the first map of the Ordnance Survey from 1869, a building with a similar floor plan is shown in the same place. Today's building is listed for the first time on the second map from 1899 and was therefore built between 1869 and 1899. In 2007 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The brick building is located on a narrow headland between the Carron and the former main lock step of the Forth and Clyde Canal, not far from the Grangemouth swing bridge, which is a Category B structure . The slightly protruding middle section of the symmetrically constructed, two-story building comprises three vertical axes. A wooden door is installed in the middle. It ends with a triangular gable in which a clock is set in the middle. Elongated parts of the building connect on both sides. The windows are each arranged on four vertical axes and are separated by flat brick pilasters . All building openings close off with round arches. There is also an ox eye in each of the two side gable surfaces . Some openings in the rear of the building, which is exposed to the northwest, have meanwhile been closed by masonry. The original, small-scale lattice windows have been partially preserved. The gable roofs are covered with gray slate.
