Werner Butter
Werner Butter (born October 25, 1932 in Düsseldorf-Flingern ; † January 20, 2009 in Mallorca ) was a German copywriter .
Butter initially worked as a steel wholesaler, he was also a trained sawmaker and trained journalist. At the time the Berlin Wall was being built, he was culture editor at the Kurier in Berlin.
In 1964, Butter became a copywriter at the first foreign branch of the New York-based creative agency Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB), which had opened in Düsseldorf. In this he was responsible for creation as managing director for almost 20 years. The campaigns he created during this time, especially those for the VW Beetle and the VW Golf , are now considered classics in German advertising. These include, for example, the claim "You know what you have" (for the VW Beetle, taken over by Persil in 1970 ), "He runs and runs and runs" and "The Ervolkswagen".
In 1985 Werner Butter was one of the founders of the Franco-German agency RSCG, BUTTER, RANG in Düsseldorf. In 1995 he and other partners founded the agency that bears his name today: Butter. GmbH.
In the course of his career, the advertising specialist has received numerous international and national awards, including 111 from the renowned Art Directors Club for Germany (ADC). At the suggestion of the then North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Wolfgang Clement , Werner Butter's life's work was honored in May 2001 with the award of the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 2005 Butter was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Advertising .
