Fagerer started grass skiing in 1980. Three years later he won his first of four Austrian championship titles in giant slalom. He won the first medal at major international events at the European Championships in Gutenstein in 1988 , where he came third in the giant slalom. Two more medals - silver in giant slalom and bronze in super-G - followed at the 1989 World Cup in Kindberg . In the 1989 season he finished third in the overall European Cup ranking.
After a hip operation, Fagerer could not take part in any competitions during the entire 1990 season. The next year he managed to return to the top international and at the 1991 World Cup in Bursa , he won silver in the Super-G and bronze in the giant slalom. He celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1992 European Championships in his home town of Faistenau , when he became European champion in giant slalom. In the 1993 season he finished third overall in the European Cup for the second time. At the next two European Championships Fagerer was able to win another medal: in 1994 he was second in the combination and in 1996 third in the giant slalom. At world championships, however, he did not achieve any further top results. In 1999 Fagerer ended his career at the age of 35.
