Life and work

After completing secondary school, Werner Forkert obtained a teaching qualification for all lower-level subjects at the Nossen training institute . In 1962 he began his service at the Polytechnische Oberschule 2 in Senftenberg. His interest has always been history, which is why Werner Forkert began a distance learning course at the Potsdam University in 1970 and completed it after five years as a diploma history teacher. For his diploma thesis, he researched many archives in the region. This sparked his fondness for the history of the city of Senftenberg.

Werner Forkert later founded the sports, tourism and history working groups in the Pionierhaus . He tried especially in the working groups “Young Historians” and “Young Archaeologists” to bring the passion for scientific work closer to the children. For his pedagogical work, Werner Forkert was promoted to senior teacher and later to a teacher.

Forkert was also interested in sport. It all began at POS 2 with his working group “Shooting”. He brought many of his sport shooters to the GDR championships. After 1990 Werner Forkert co-founded two shooting clubs in which he was responsible for training shooters.

In his free time Werner Forkert researched local history. For over thirty years he collected and sifted through material and had long conversations with long-established citizens in order to find out more about the history of the city of Senftenberg.
