Werner Leimgruber (born September 2, 1934 in Basel ) is a former Swiss football player who played in defense. With FC Zurich , he became Swiss champions in 1963 , 1966 and 1968 and won the Cup in 1966 and 1970.

career

His home club was FC Zurich, for which he played from 1954 to 1970, only interrupted by a detour to FC Locarno in the 1956/57 season. The double success came in 1966 under coach Louis Maurer at the side of teammates like Klaus Stürmer , Fritz Künzli , Heinz Bäni , Jakob Kuhn and Rosario Martinelli . In the championship round in 1966 Leimgruber had played in 26 league games (1 goal). He played a total of 314 championship games for FCZ and scored 74 goals. In the 1963/64 European Cup , Leimgruber and his team reached the semi-finals against Real Madrid . In both matches on April 22nd in Zurich (1: 2) and on May 7th, 1964 in Madrid (0: 6) he was in action as a cleaner in front of the cleaner Rene Brodmann . But against the Real Stars Alfredo Di Stefano , Ferenc Puskás and Francisco Gento , the performance of the FCZ was not enough.

Leimgruber played 10 internationals for the Swiss national team (9 internationals according to other sources) and was also a member of the team for the 1966 World Cup . At the World Cup tournament in England he was on July 15, 1966 in Sheffield in the 1: 2 defeat against Spain in action. Rene Brodmann, Xavier Stierli, Heinz Bäni and Jakob Kuhn from FC Zurich also played.
