Werner Mundt

Werner Mundt (born February 25, 1939 in Dortmund , † March 18, 2005 ) was a German boxer and the brother of Willy Quatuor . He was German master among amateurs and professionals.

Career

Mundt started boxing in 1953 at the age of 14 because there was something to eat after training, and at that time hunger was still omnipresent in Germany. Thus began his amateur career with the pugilists 27 in Dortmund. He also worked as a window cleaner in a building cleaning company together with his brother Willy Quatuor.

In his amateur career, Werner Mundt completed 128 fights, a. a. International fights against Wales, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Italy etc. A highlight was winning the German championship in 1961 against Dieter, he was also twice runner-up and from 1960 to 1963 he won the Westphalian championship four times and was district champion three times, and he represented the German colors eight times in international battles. Often Werner Mundt u. a. Sparring partner with Gustav "Bubi" Scholz .

Since he had not been taken into account for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he moved from amateur camp to professional camp on August 26, 1963. His manager was Bruno Müller, probably the most famous manager of his time in Germany.

On January 30, 1965, he became the first German to win the super welterweight championship in the fight against Wilhelm Niederau . In the European ranking from the point of view of Hans Benini, as of June 1965, he took 5th place and remained in the top 10 in Europe until 1971. On September 10, 1966, he fought against Luigi Patruno in the Frankfurt Waldstadion in the match for the legendary world championship match between Karl Mildenberger and Muhammad Ali , formerly Cassius Clay . He often played training camps with Karl Mildenberger. This was followed by the challenge fight for the European Championship on July 1, 1966 against Bo Högberg , which he lost by knockout in round 9. Bo Högberg was then allowed to challenge Sandro Mazzinghi on September 11, 1966 . Werner Mundt's last fight took place on December 6, 1973 in Copenhagen against Poul Knudsen.

He had a total of 43 professional fights, of which he won 30, lost 11 and reached a draw in two.
