As his brother Alfred emerged from the youth of TSV Straubing , Bayern Munich signed him in 1977 for their amateur team, for which he was active until 1979. At the beginning of the 1979/80 season he was an amateur in the professional squad, but was loaned to the Stuttgarter Kickers on October 1st via an amicable loan deal .

On December 8th (19th matchday) he scored his first two goals in paid football in an 8-1 win at home against SV Röchling Völklingen . He scored all five goals in his 25 league games in home games. He also made two appearances in the DFB Cup and scored one goal. After the loan period ended, Steinkirchner returned to the Munich amateurs and stayed until the end of the 1983/84 season , in which he was runner- up with Bayern . Then he returned to his youth club TSV Straubing.

From 1992 on he coached several Bavarian lower-class clubs; Since the 2013/14 season he has been an assistant coach for both the SC 1928 Rain team and the reserve team ( SC 1928 Rain II ) from the municipality of the same name in the Straubing-Bogen district .
