Werner Ulrich (zoologist)

Werner Ulrich (born February 7, 1900 in Berlin ; † January 19, 1977 there ) was a German zoologist .

Life

Werner Ulrich studied biology with Paul Schulze in Berlin. After a short stay in Rostock , he returned to the Zoological Institute of the Agricultural University in Berlin in 1926 and completed his habilitation there. In 1934 he became head of the Institute for Apiculture in Berlin-Dahlem , which in 1937 was forcibly incorporated into the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . During this time Ulrich was also active in the SS research facility Ahnenerbe , which was founded in 1935 . On June 25, 1939, his predecessor at the Dahlem Institute, Ludwig Armbruster , was denounced by Werner Ulrich for having Jewish contacts. In the same year Werner Ulrich was appointed associate professor. In 1943 he was drafted into a reserve police battalion and in 1945 was briefly taken prisoner of war . Ulrich kept his position after 1945 and was also director of the Zoological Museum at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. After 1949 he became the founding dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Free University in West Berlin. As director of the Zoological Institute of the Free University of Berlin, he retired in 1965.

Werner Ulrich had been married to the biologist Margarete Bayer since 1927 and had a daughter.
