The Werner Road in the district town Düren ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a historic city road .

location

The street begins at Hohenzollernstrasse and ends at Dr.-Kotthaus-Strasse / Am Adenauerpark.

On the north side of the street is a large senior citizens' home, on the south one of the three secondary schools in Düren, the former Protestant Martin Luther School.

history

The street is named after the first professional mayor of Düren, Hubert Jakob Werners (1831-1894). He was mayor from 1868 to 1894.

Wernersstrasse used to be called Franzosengasse as far as Hohenzollernstrasse . The battle of Aldenhoven between the French and Austrians took place on October 2, 1794 , in which the right wing of the French fought near Düren. The French who died of the epidemic were buried in the so-called Franzosengraben. On September 9, 1914, Franzosengasse and Friesenstrasse were renamed Wernersstrasse.

There is a Rückriem stele on the street . It is reminiscent of the former Friedrich Ebert youth home .
