history

The company was founded in 1963 in Langenhagen by Kurt Jodexnis and Detlef Kleinert as “customer service company for television sets mbH & COMP. KG ". The television sets, which were still expensive at the time, could be insured here. When it started in 1963, the newly founded company introduced a product that protected against wear and tear. In 1964 it was renamed "Repair Replacement Fund for Electrical Installations GmbH" in order to emphasize the company's purpose more clearly. In 1967, the company switched to the sole sale of TV retailers or TV workshops and changed the name to “Extended Warranty Repair Replacement for Electrical Systems GmbH KG (GVG)” in line with the introduction of the color TV in the Federal Republic of Germany. Three years later, the company "Elektro Duration Guarantee Repair Costs AG" (EDG) was registered as a stock corporation. In the years to come, EDG grew steadily and the number of insurance contracts also increased permanently with the triumph of color television. In 1980, as a result of technical developments, a new line of business was added with the insurance of expensive video equipment and the “VWR Video Maintenance Ring” was launched.

In 1988 the two companies EDG and VWR were merged and the Wertgarantie Technische Versicherung AG was founded . Since they had good experiences with the niche product of a permanent electrical warranty, the company was always looking for specialty products. In May 1994, AGILA, the pet health insurance company, welcomed a new member of the corporate family. In 1999, another niche product was developed: the insurance of bicycles. Since the beginning of 2000, the company and the number of contracts continued to grow. In addition, the business was expanded to Austria. In 2007 Thomas Schröder was appointed chairman of the board. The specialist insurer has also been active in the Netherlands since 2009 and has since expanded its business to other European countries. In 2014 the group of companies grew to include the French “Société Française de Garantie” (SFG). In 2015 the business was expanded to cover letters for electricity, water and gas lines in households, and hearing aids insurance was added a little later. In spring 2018, Wertgarantie took over the Spanish insurance broker Garante. E-scooters have also been insured since 2019.

Business activity

Value guarantee offers insurance and warranty extensions for technical devices, technical tools, hearing aids, bicycles and letters of protection for electricity, water and gas lines, with which customers can protect themselves against repair costs, for example. The products are preferably sold by stationary specialist retailers for consumer electronics, but also directly via online platforms such as sofortschutz.net, onlineversicherung.de, coveryou.nl, seguromovil.com, miseguromovil.com and smartphonepolis.nl. In addition to Germany, Wertgarantie is also active in Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Spain.

In 2019, the total premium income of the Wertgarantie Group was around EUR 311 million and sales from warranty services were EUR 27 million. At the end of 2019, the number of contracts was over 6.8 million. The group of companies now employs over 850 people across Europe.
