The West Brook Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 1990. In 1993 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 10.7 km² reserve is located 14 km southwest of Springdale in the central northwest of Newfoundland. It is divided into two parts, 8.3 km² and 2.4 km², which are barely a kilometer apart. The reserve is located in a hilly landscape on the upper reaches of West Brook .
flora
The West Brook Ecological Reserve protects a population of the American red pine, which is rare in Newfoundland . The stock is declining and outdated. The trees in the reserve are mostly between 75 and 95 years old. Other tree species in the reserve are: black spruce , white pine , balsam fir , larch , paper birch and American quivering poplar .
