The West Gonja District is a district in the Savannah Region in northern Ghana .

The district is named after the Gonja people , another 21 ethnic groups live here. In addition to the Gonja, the Tampulma, Dagomba, Hanga, Mamprusi and Dargabas. Until 1994 the Kokombas were an important ethnic group, they had to leave the area in 1994 in the course of the clashes between the Gonjas and Nawuris on the one hand and the Kokombas and Dagombas on the other. Today there is peaceful coexistence. 70% of the population follow Islam, 18% Christianity and 12% of the population worship traditional deities.
