Damongo

Damongo is the capital of the Savannah region in northern Ghana with around 6000 inhabitants.

Damongo can be reached from Fufulso , also called Yapei Junction , via a 60 km long, previous track, this road has been under construction since 2013, and many tourists who are on their way to the Mole National Park come through here. There is a Catholic Guest House and the “Mariama Guesthouse” that offer accommodation and meals.
Damongo is located in the West Gonja District .
Residents
The majority of its inhabitants are Gonjas , but Frafras , Ashanti , Dagaabas , Dagombas , Kassem and some other ethnic groups are also represented.
Due to conflicts between different population groups, the Unity Center - today the “Center for Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies” - was founded, offering various projects to stabilize peace in the region, from violence prevention seminars to retreats for priests.
Facilities
Damongo owns a hospital , the West Gonja Hospital , which makes it a contact point for people from all over the district (from a radius of around 80 km). On Sundays, the two Catholic churches in town are important places to go, St. Anne in Damongo town and St. Theresa in the Canteen district near the West Gonja Hospital.
There is an internet café next to the bus station, from which buses run daily to Tamale , Wa, Mole and Bole.
Damongo is episcopal see of the Diocese of Damongo . Bishop has been Most Rev. Peter Paul Angkyier since March 25, 2011. The previous bishop Most Rev. Philip Naameh was appointed Archbishop of the Diocese Tamale. Damongo has several elementary and secondary schools (primary schools and JSS) as well as three high schools (SSS):
- DASS (Damongo Secondary School)
- Dassatec (Damongo Technical Secondary School)
- SAGISS (St. Anne's Girls' Senior Secondary School)
There are relationships with the diocese of Münster in a partnership with the northern dioceses of the country. The hospital is also supported by the Mustangh Foundation , which was established by medical students from Maastricht . Next to the cathedral is the Damongo Kids Club, a place where children can learn and play. As part of this partnership work, European volunteers are constantly living on site. There are also good contacts with the parish of Kuchl in Austria.
Events
Saturdays weekly market in Damongo, especially popular here the locally brewed is millet beer , Pito mentioned.
