The Savannah Region is a region in Ghana with the capital Damongo . Its name refers to the wet savannah vegetation zone in which it is located.

geography

The region is located in the northwest of the country and borders the Upper West Region and North East Region in the north, the Northern Region in the east, the Oti Region in the southeast, the Bono East Region in the south, the Bono Region in the southwest as well as the Ivory Coast and to Burkina Faso in the west. With an area of ​​35,862 km², it is the largest region in Ghana, but the second smallest in terms of population.

In the southeast is the Volta reservoir .

history

The Savannah Region is one of the six newly established regions of the country in February 2019. It was an election promise made by the New Patriotic Party for the 2016 election to create new regions. In a referendum on December 27, 2018, 99.52% of the voters were in favor of the formation of the new region, so that it was founded on February 12, 2019 with the Constitutional Instrument 115 as a spin-off from the Northern Region .
