The Oti Region is a region in Ghana with the capital Dambai . Its name is derived from the Oti River , on whose lower course it lies.

geography

The region is located in the east of the country and borders the Northern Region in the north, Togo in the east, the Volta Region in the south, the Eastern Region in the southwest and the Bono East Region and the Savannah Region in the west. With an area of ​​11,066 km², it is the fourth smallest in the middle of the Ghana's regions in terms of population.

A large part of its western border runs in the Volta reservoir .

history

The old trading town of Kete Krachi in the northern part of the region is historically significant . As the end point of a caravan route, it was a “transshipment point” for slaves who were brought to the coast from here on ships. However, the old city fell victim to the Volta reservoir project. Today's Kete Kratchi was only built in the 1960s.

In contrast to the rest of Ghana, the region was originally not colonized by the British, but by the Germans. From 1884 to 1918 (actually until 1914) the region was part of the German Togo colony . So find u. a. in the city of Kpandu still today remains of German colonial architecture. From 1919 to 1956, the present-day Volta Region as was British Togoland a British League of Nations - protectorate . After a referendum in 1956, it was incorporated into the new state of Ghana in 1957 .

The Oti Region is one of the six newly established regions in the country in February 2019. It was an election promise made by the New Patriotic Party for the 2016 election to create new regions. In a referendum on December 27, 2018, 98.64% of the voters were in favor of the formation of the new region, so that it was founded on February 15, 2019 with the Constitutional Instrument 112 as a spin-off from the Volta Region .
