The North East Region is a region in Ghana with the capital Nalerigu . Her name ( German : "Northeast Region") refers to her location in Ghana.

geography

The region is located in the northeast of the country and borders the Upper East Region in the north, Togo in the east, the Northern Region in the south, the Savannah Region in the southwest and the Upper West Region in the west. With an area of ​​9,074 km², it is the fourth smallest region in Ghana, measured by its population the smallest.

The region has a west-east extension of around 220 kilometers, but only a north-south extension of around 40 kilometers.

history

The North East Region is one of the six newly founded regions of the country in February 2019. It was an election promise made by the New Patriotic Party for the 2016 election to create new regions. In a referendum on December 27, 2018, 99.67% of the voters were in favor of the formation of the new region, so that it was founded on February 12, 2019 with the Constitutional Instrument 116 as a spin-off from the Northern Region .
