The Western North Region is a region in Ghana with the capital Wiawso . Its name refers to its history as the formerly northern part of the western region .

geography

The region is located in the far west of the country and borders the Bono Region in the north, the Ahafo Region and Ashanti Region in the northeast, the Central Region and Western Region in the southeast and the Ivory Coast in the west. With an area of ​​10,074 km², it is in the midfield of the regions of Ghana, measured by its population in the lower midfield.

history

The Western North Region is one of the six newly established regions in the country in February 2019. It was an election promise made by the New Patriotic Party for the 2016 election to create new regions. In a referendum on December 27, 2018, 99.51% of the voters were in favor of the formation of the new region, so that it was founded on February 15, 2019 with the Constitutional Instrument 117 as a spin-off from the Western Region .
