The Central Gonja District is a district of the Savannah Region in northern Ghana and was separated from the West Gonja District in 2004 .
population
The eponymous Gonja make up about 80% of the total population. There are also representatives of the Dagomba , Hanga , Mamprusi and Dagaare peoples . 70% follow Islam, 18% Christianity and 12% of the population worship traditional deities.
In 1990 and 1996 the district was ravaged by ethnic conflicts, which resulted in thousands leaving the district and a decline in urbanization.
