West Loch Tarbert is a bay on the west coast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Lewis and Harris . As part of Harris, it was historically part of the traditional county of Inverness-shire .
geography
At its entrance, around seven kilometers wide, West Loch Tarbert tapers to a width of around 100 meters at its head. The bay enters the land mass about ten kilometers and ends at Tarbert , the capital of Harris , the southern part of the twin island of Lewis and Harris. Together with the opposite East Loch Tarbert , the bay forms the only around 700 meters wide isthmus on which Tarbert is located, which separates North and South Harris.
In front of the entrance to West Loch Tarbert is the island of Taransay , which breaks the rough winds off the bay. Within the bay are the islands of Soay Mor , Soay Beg and Isay . There are hills along the banks of West Loch Tarbert. The A859 runs along the north bank .
