history

In 1830, the editor of The Penny Magazine filed a successful petition - concerning the untenable conditions in the cemeteries and churchyards in London - with Parliament. As a result, various laws were passed, which prohibited burials in the churchyards and allowed the establishment of new commercial cemeteries. The first of these cemeteries was Kensal Green Cemetery in 1832 , which was established and operated by the General Cemetery Company. As the second of the Magnificent Seven, West Norwood Cemetery was built from 1836 on the grounds of Lord Thurlow's estate in what was then Lower Norwood. The buyer and operator of the new cemetery was the South Metropolitan Cemetery Company, founded for this purpose.

The new cemetery was consecrated on December 7, 1837 by the Bishop of Winchester, to whose diocese the cemetery remained until 1877 before it was transferred to the Diocese of Rochester and finally in 1905 to Southwark. The first burials took place shortly after the consecration. The architect and director of the cemetery William Tite designed the landscape and some monuments. The cemetery was the first in the United Kingdom to be built in the neo-Gothic style. Today the cemetery is closed to new burials as the burial places are full. Only the crematorium is still used today.
