The River Effra is a watercourse in Brixton in the London Borough of Lambeth . The location of the source is controversial. The stream appears to flow in two arms in the Norwood area. It follows Half Moon Lane, Coldharbour Lane and Brixton Road. It flows into the Thames on the south side of the Vauxhall Bridge in a small and a large outlet on the north side of the bridge . The watercourse was moved below the surface around the middle of the 18th century.

The course of the Effra is noticeable through flooding. Floods in the Norwood area occurred in 1914, the 1920s, 1935 and 2007. Widening and deepening of the canal should prevent flooding.

In the 1950s, the Oval cricket stadium was flooded , for which the Effra was blamed. In Victorian times , a coffin was found floating in the Thames from West Norwood Cemetery . The Effra runs under the cemetery and is said to have washed the coffin out of the grave, which is undisturbed on the surface.

In 1992, a short-lived campaign went public calling for the watercourse to be moved back to the surface.
