description

Westerdunes was built in 1908. Along with Carlekemp and Bunkerhill , it is one of three Elizabethan mansions on Abbotsford Road on the western edge of North Berwick. Stylistically, it is more similar to Carlekemp. The Scottish architect George Washington Browne was probably involved in the planning of the building. A student of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll may be responsible for planning the surrounding gardens.

Three cross gables dominate the north-facing front of the two-story main building. In the center is the recessed portal with a squat round arch . A triplet window with flanking twin windows is let in above it . On both sides, cantilevers extend over two floors. A billiard room was once set up in the set- back wing on the left . The windows there close with flat segmental arches ; the part of the building with a steep pitched roof . The back of the building is designed similar to the front. The roofs are covered with slate from Westmorland .
