Westerkerk (Enkhuizen)
The Wester- or Gomaruskerk is a church in the Dutch city of Enkhuizen .
history
The Westerkerk was built around 1470 as a three-nave church. The wooden tower construction was built in 1519. The choir area was still being built around the middle of the 16th century. In 1572 the church was taken over by the Protestants. It is named Gomarus Church after the Reformed theologian Franciscus Gomarus .
Today it serves as a cultural center and is one of the top 100 Dutch cultural monuments .
organ
The organ of the Westerkerk was built in 1899 by the organ builder DG Steenkuyl. The organ case dates from 1549 and was built by the carpenter and organ builder Hendrik Niehoff . The prospect pipes date from the year 1683. In 2003, the instrument was dismantled by the Flentrop organ building company . In 2010 the restored case with the prospect pipes was put up again. It is planned to install a new (better fitting) organ in the historical prospectus . The organ work from 1899 is to be used for a different purpose.
