Western Cemetery (Port Louis)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western Cemetery (Westfriedhof) is a cemetery in Port Louis , the capital of Mauritius .

Originally, part of what is now Company Gardens was used as a cemetery. This area was swampy and therefore unsuitable for building. Under the governor Desroches (1769–1772) the area was drained and the use of the cemetery was discontinued. Instead, a new cemetery outside the city, today's Western Cemetery, was created.

The cemetery is in the Les Salines district, adjacent to the Robert Edward Heart Gardens public park . After a series of extensions, the entire cemetery complex in Les Salines consists of the neighboring cemeteries of St Georges, Gebert, Western and the Muslim cemetery. In addition, there is the Eastern Cemetery (Ostfriedhof) in the Roche Bois district. All cemeteries are operated by the Public Health Department of the Municipal Council of Port Louis.
