Western Mass Pioneers is an American football - Franchise of the USL League Two from Ludlow , Massachusetts .
The franchise was founded in 1998 and plays in the USL League Two , the fourth highest division in North American football. Until the 2010 season, the team always played in the respective third-highest division in the USA.
history
In August 1997, the United States International Soccer League awarded the franchise license to the amateur club Gremio Lusitano from Ludlow, Massachusetts. Since it was forbidden to use team names with an ethnic background, such as Gremio or Lusitano, the newspaper Springfield Union-News organized a competition to find a name for the new team. This is where the name Pioneers was found. In the same year, the team's first coach was found with the former Polish soccer player Leszek Wrona. In 1999 the Pioneers won the USL D-3 Pro League.
After the USL Second Division was dissolved at the end of the 2009 season , the team moved one league level lower in the USL Premier Development League.
