Westgate Hall is a residential building in the Scottish town of Denholm in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The building is on Westgate on the western edge of Denholm. The residential building, built in the course of the 17th century, is a simple type of townhouse that is rarely found in Scotland. The masonry of the 16.8 m long and 6.9 m wide, elongated building consists of quarry stone . The original Harl plaster is no longer available today. Building openings are framed with natural stone . The entrance area on the first floor on the south gable side of the two-story building is a later extension. Another modern extension can be found on the southwest side. The main portal is located on the asymmetrically constructed east facade. It is framed in a profiled manner with the year of construction 1663 in the lintel.

Large areas of the interior are no longer in their original state. However, it is worth mentioning an open fireplace on the ground floor. It is 1.8 m wide and 1.2 m high. Two plaques have been inserted into its massive, around 60 cm thick lintel. One is octagonal and shows a shield and a heart, the coat of arms of the Douglas of Cavers along with the initials SAD for "Sir Archibald Douglas, 10th of Cavers". An oblong plaque to the left shows a dagger between three wolf heads and the monogram DRS for "Dame Rachael Skene", Douglas' wife.
