In the course of Rough Wooing , Denholm was largely destroyed in the 1540s. For centuries there were textile processing companies in Denholm. In addition to agriculture, a nearby quarry also offered jobs. One of the oldest preserved buildings in Denholm is Westgate Hall, which dates back to the 17th century . In 1775 the scholar John Leyden was born in Denholm. With the Leyden Monument a memorial commemorates the son of the village.
