After attending the Knight and Cathedral School in Reval , which Otto Zoege von Manteuffel attended from 1836 to 1839, he began training in 1840 with the court painter Wilhelm von Kügelgen in Ballenstedt , the capital of the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg . His father and uncle, the twin brothers Gerhard and Karl von Kügelgen , had married Otto Zoege von Manteuffel's aunts, sisters of his father, in 1800 and 1807. In 1851 he went to Moscow , then to the Kharkov governorate . On February 1, 1871, he married Countess Emilie Reischbach-Rieth in Neu-Harm ( Kosch ), who gave birth to the twins Helene and Otto on March 7, 1878 on the estate in Lööra ( Kau ), which they had lived in since 1871 .
