Abdelhak Nouri (born April 2, 1997 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player who played for Ajax Amsterdam . His parents are from Morocco. At the beginning of July 2017, at the age of 20, he suffered cardiac arrest during a friendly game , which left him with severe and permanent brain damage. Nouri's greatest sporting success is reaching the Europa League final in 2017 , which he and his team lost to Manchester United .

Career

society

Before Nouri moved to Ajax Amsterdam in 2004 , he had played in the youth of Eendracht '82 and RKSV DCG. After going through the youth teams at Ajax Amsterdam, he was promoted to the Jong Ajax team at the end of the 2014/15 season . Nouri made his debut in the Jupiler League on March 13, 2015 against VVV-Venlo . He made his debut in the Eredivisie on October 29, 2016 against Excelsior Rotterdam .

On July 8, 2017, Nouri suffered a cardiac arrest in the 72nd minute of the test match against Werder Bremen in Hippach, Austria and had to be reanimated on the field. The game was then canceled. Ajax Amsterdam announced that Nouri was not in mortal danger, but had been put into an artificial coma. Five days after the collapse, it was revealed that Nouri had suffered severe and permanent brain damage.

Despite his condition, Nouri was symbolically included in Ajax Amsterdam's squad in the 2017/18 season . In October 2017, the association described his condition as "stable with independent breathing and independent heartbeat." In August 2018, his family announced that Nouri still needed intensive care, but was in a stable condition and could communicate with her.

There were disputes over the question of whether a heart defect - which was estimated to be harmless in 2014 - was known to whom and when, and whether it had been acted correctly in an emergency. There is much to suggest that cardiac arrhythmias existed. In June 2018, Ajax Amsterdam renamed the club's internal award for the best youth player of the season to the “Abdelhak Nouri Trophy” ( Abdelhak Nouri Trofee ). In the same month, the association admitted for the first time that there had been errors in the first aid. In order to pass on their experiences of sudden cardiac arrest on the pitch, Ajax wants to set up a pilot project for all Dutch football clubs. Ajax Amsterdam dedicated the championship they won in the 2018/19 season to their former player Nouri.

On April 1, 2020, the contract, which ran until June 30, 2020, was canceled by the association, as it would otherwise have been tacitly extended.

National team

Nouri has been a member of the Dutch Association's junior selection teams since the U15. With the U17 selection, he took part in the U17 European Championship in Malta in 2014 . During the tournament he scored two goals and only had to admit defeat to the English offspring on penalties in the final. In 2015 and 2016 Nouri was part of the Dutch squad at the U19 European Championships , but both times they failed in the group stage. In 2016, they were also defeated in the decider for participation in the U20 World Cup 2017 of the German U19 team after penalties. Nouri was part of the regular team in both appearances and came to a total of seven finals (two goals).
