Westhall Castle

Westhall Castle , also Westhall House , is a country house north of the village of Oyne in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . Integrated into this house is a tower house from the 16th century, which was significantly expanded in the 17th and 19th centuries. Historic Environment Scotland has listed the cottage as a Category A Historic Building.

history

In the 13th century, the property belonged to the bishops of Aberdeen and fell in the reformation of the Clan Gordon . The original L-shaped tower house was built in the 16th century and a round tower was added in the 17th century. In 1681 the Reverend James Horne , Vicar of Elgin , bought the property. Additional additions followed around 1838. In the mid-19th century, Westhall Castle belonged to Sir James Elphinstone , who invested in both the Aberdeen Canal Company and the Great North of Scotland Railway . Elphinstone, who lived in the nearby Logie House , was a member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Portsmouth from 1857-1880 .

Westhall Castle later served as a farming school and hotel, but it was closed in the 1990s. A period of neglect followed during which the house was sold several times and had to be listed on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland . In 2011 new owners took over the house and its condition is described today as "partially dilapidated, but secured".
