history
The Westland family from Huizen has been involved in the cheese trade since 1932 , before they worked in the fishing industry. The construction of the dike forced the family to make this change. In 1936 the brothers Klaas, Gerrit and Lambert founded the “Westland Kaasspecialiteiten”. Lambert Westland was looking for a hearty and flavorful cheese. After much experimentation, he succeeded in developing the Old Amsterdam with a unique acid alarm clock . The exact preparation is still a secret today. In 1985 the cheese was launched on the Dutch market and immediately became a sales success. Today the company is part of Westland Kaas Groep BV and is still family-owned. With a share of 12 percent of the entire Dutch cheese market, Westland Kaasspecialiteiten is one of the largest private cheese dairies in the country. In addition to the Netherlands, it also sells cheese in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain.

- Old Amsterdam The special Gouda cheese is made by the Westland company. The maturation period is 8 months. It is one of the hard cheeses ; but can be cut well at room temperature. Its color is a light gold-yellow-orange. The small white deposits are ripening crystals and are its trademark. The rind is black and not suitable for consumption. The cheese has received several national and international awards. In addition to 'Das Original', there are also Old Amsterdam 'Pikant & Cremig' and 'Jung & Mild' slices.
