The Western Aral Sea ( Kazakh. Батыс Арал теңізі, Uzbek. Gʻarb Orol dengizi , Russian Западное Аральское море) is the western part of the former Aral Sea . It lies within the Aralo-Caspian Depression in a basin , the Turan lowlands , between the Ustyurt plateau and the Aralkum desert . The lake belongs partly to Kazakhstan and partly to Uzbekistan .
On its east bank is the former island of rebirth , in the former town of Kantubek the Soviet Biopreparat authority maintained a research laboratory for biological weapons , including anthrax pathogens, until 1991 .
