The Whakatane Beacon , also known for short as the Beacon , is a regional, privately owned daily newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the northeastern part of the North Island in the Bay of Plenty region . The newspaper is based in Whakatāne .

history

The Whakatane Beacon had its origin in the Whakatane County Press, founded in 1907 . Its founder, the newspaper maker Charles Gibbs Beckett , used the Whakatane Times printing press for his newspaper , which was founded in 1899 and had to give up that same year. The first day of publication is January 14, 1907. The newspaper appeared three times a week in the morning and was changed to daily in 1916.

In 1919 the sheet was taken over by the Bay of Plenty Printing Company and switched back to evening edition in 1923. In 1935, the new owner changed the name of Whakatane County Press to Bay of Plenty Press . In February 1939 the newspaper ceased to appear, was taken over by FJ Reynolds and his newly formed Beacon Printing and Publishing Company , and from April 1939 it was published again three times a week.

During the Second World War , the paper appeared only twice a week for a short time, but from July 31, 1945 it was back to normal and under a new name, as Whakatane Beacon .
