What Is Truth is a country song by Johnny Cash , released as a single on Columbia Records in March 1970 and produced by Bob Johnstone.

It was recorded on March 9, 1970 in Nashville with Cash (vocals, rhythm guitar), Bob Wootton (lead guitar), Marshall Grant (electric bass), WS Holland (drums) and Norman Blake (Dobro) as well as unknown strings in the background .

The piece premiered on Cash's TV show . The title comes from a question that Pontius Pilate put to Jesus Christ . The single reached third place on Billboard Country Songs .

The text describes a generation conflict in which the youth are oppressed, but no longer want to tolerate the supremacy of the elderly. You question u. a. the war and also the method of judging a young person for his looks (long hair) just because he did not conform to the customs of earlier times. Cash takes the side of the youth and gives them the right to ask what truth actually is.

The song never appeared on a Cash album. Accordingly, it is only included on compilations, such as the box set Cash - The Legend from 2005.
