What Love Is ( English for What Love Is ) is an English-language pop song, which was written by Uku Suviste and interpreted. Sharon Vaughn wrote the text. Estonia should have competed with this title at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

background

Suviste made contact with Sharon Vaughn through Filipp Kirkorow . According to his own statements, he never met her personally during the production of the song. On February 15, 2020, he took part in the first semifinals of the Eesti Laul 2020 show, in which he took second place. At the final on February 29th, he was able to achieve first place in both voting rounds and thus emerged as the winner of the show.

The accompanying music video was released on November 30, 2019. It shows the performer singing in an empty warehouse, which is gradually being surrounded by candles and lights. The director was Martin Heinla.

Music and lyrics

When asked what love was, Suviste said he couldn't put the answer into words, but copywriter Vaughn did it very well. He can best express the answer on stage through his performance. The text consists of two stanzas. The first verse is followed by a pre-chrous before the chorus is sung for the first time. This is followed by the second verse, after which the refrain is sung again. Finally, the first part of the chorus is repeated twice, with the text being mainly performed by the choir on the last repetition.

publication

The title was released on December 3, 2019 on various music streaming platforms. A version in Estonian was also presented, but this has not yet been published. Leelo Tungal wrote the text for this.

reception

Wiwibloggs described the title as a “clichéd Eurovision ballad ”. However, this aspect was positively highlighted by the German blog ESC Kompakt as a "wonderful ESC power ballad". Others of the German-speaking bloggers, on the other hand, describe the song as a "song that the ARD audience would certainly have sent to the ESC with a kiss on the hand". He is also Suviste's weakest contribution to the Eesti Laul.

Filipp Kirkorow was disappointed after the Estonian radio spoke out against Suviste's direct nomination for 2021 after the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was canceled. He is being treated too harshly because he will have to face another election next year. The criticism was rejected by those responsible.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Estonia should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.
