When You Say Nothing at All is a country song by Keith Whitley that was released in 1988. It was written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz . The most successful cover version was the ballad by Ronan Keating .

RCA Records released When You Say Nothing at All as a subsequent single on Don't Close Your Eyes , which was also his third album. After three top 10 hits , When You Say Nothing at All reached number one on Billboard Country Songs like its predecessor . When You Say Nothing at All entered the charts at number 61 on September 17, 1988. Gradually, the song reached number one, where it stayed for two weeks. This was the second of five consecutive number 1 successes for Whitley in the Billboard Country Songs charts, but he died on May 9, 1989 of alcohol poisoning and could not witness the last two successes.

Alison Krauss

In 1994 Alison Krauss recorded When You Say Nothing at All with her band Union Station for a tribute album for Keith Whitley. Krauss was completely surprised by the success of the song itself. With her version of the song, she made it to number three on Billboard Country Songs.

When You Say Nothing at All was the first single release of the debut album Ronan by the artist Ronan Keating in 1999 . This version was recorded as the soundtrack for the film Notting Hill in 1999 . On July 26, 1999, the song was released in England. The song reached number 1 in the charts in Great Britain, Ireland and New Zealand. In German-speaking countries, the song was in the top 10.
