When in Rome is a British new wave group that had its greatest success in the late 1980s.
history
The band was founded by the singer Clive Farrington, a former member of the group Leisure from Manchester . Another former member of the band, Corinne Drewery, later became known as Swing Out Sister . Farrington teamed up with Michael Floreale and Andy O'Connell. Farrington and Floreale wrote new song material together and before the first demo recordings had begun, O'Connell left the band and was replaced by Andrew Mann. With the help of the demo recordings When in Rome got a record deal with Virgin Records . After the maxi single The Promise climbed to the top of the Billboard Dance Club Play charts , recordings began for an entire album. The first regular single from the debut album bearing the band name was a remixed, shorter version of The Promise that reached position eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988 . The album itself reached number 84 on the US album charts . The next single only barely reached the Hot 100, and two other singles could not make it into the Hot 100 at all. Due to lack of success, the group broke up in 1990 without having released another album.
Michael Floreale moved to the United States, where he appeared with other musicians from 2006 under the band name When in Rome . Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann stayed in Great Britain, where they also appeared as When in Rome from 2009 . In the USA, however, they use the name Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann formerly of When in Rome , as Floreale had the band name protected in the United States at the time.
