White Berry ( Japanese ホワイトベリー was) a J-Pop - girl group from Hokkaido , Japan .

history

The band was founded in 1994 under the name Whiteberry Kids and achieved a certain degree of popularity in 1999 through Judy and Mary .

Whiteberry initially mainly provided anime intros for series such as Pokémon .

The band - singer Yuki Maeda, guitarist Aya Inatsuki, bassist Yukari Hasegawa, keyboardist Rimi Mizusawa, and drummer Erika Kawamura - was formed when the members - all lifelong friends while Maeda and Kawamura were also cousins - were still in elementary school. A few years and a number of local appearances later, the group was discovered by members of the popular Japanese rock band Judy and Mary and, in 1999, won a recording deal with Sony Japan's pop artist Imprint.

The group, which was still in high school at the time, recorded their first EP "After School" and released it, which was quickly followed by several singles, all original material except for their fourth, a cover of the Jitterin 'Jinn hit "Natsu Matsuri ". The single became the band's most popular number and is now more identified with them than with the original group. The group took advantage of the popularity and finished and released their debut album "Hatsu".
