Whitechapel Boys

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Whitechapel Boys were a group of Anglo-Jewish artists from about 1910 to 1914. The term itself was only later coined by the writer Joseph Lefkowitz , who himself belonged to the group. The group is named after the London borough of Whitechapel , which was a traditional Jewish neighborhood in London.

In addition to Lefkowitz, members of the group were the writer and painter Isaac Rosenberg , the painter Mark Gertler , the painter David Bomberg , the writer Stephen Winsten , the writer and publisher John Rodker and, as the only woman, the illustrator Clare Winsten (née Birnberg)
