The Whitelee Wind Farm is the largest onshore wind farm in the UK . It is located on a hill between 300 and 370 meters above sea level around 20 kilometers south of Glasgow in the south-west of Scotland .
Wind farm
The onshore wind farm with 215 Siemens, Alstom and NEG Micon wind turbines currently has a total output of 539 MW . The wind farm was built by the Spanish company Iberdrola and is operated by the Iberdrola subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables . According to the operator, it covers roughly the annual electricity needs of around 300,000 British households.
At the time of commissioning in May 2009, Whitelee Wind Farm was the largest wind farm in Europe with a nominal output of 322 MW. After that, the facility was gradually expanded. Work on the extension began in November 2010 with completion dates from December 2012 to March 2013.
Battery storage
In 2019, plans became known to expand the wind farm with a battery storage power plant based on lithium-ion accumulators . The battery should have an output of 50 MW and provide control power depending on the situation , serve to maintain frequency or be used as a real energy storage device for bridging times with low wind power feed-in. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2020. Whitelee is the fourth wind farm in Great Britain to be expanded to include a battery storage power plant.
