Wasdow Castle

The castle Wasdow is the ruins of a medieval lowland castle , located in the village Wasdow in the municipality Behren-Lübchin at the Warbel in the flat to hilly ground moraine at the edge of Trebeltales . A large part of the tower and the foundations of the residential and farm building have been preserved from the former castle complex.

history

The castle was built in the 13th century during the German colonization to protect the nearby trade route and the navigable treble. This castle was a typical defense system of the lower nobility. The castle was initially owned by the Hobe family , secured from Hobe the Black († 1379), Lord of Wasdow. Due to its location on the Warbel, the immediate area was ideal for defense. Next to the actual residential and farm buildings was the well-preserved keep , which was also known as the fishing tower . This tower was built from field stones and bricks. His basement was on the level in the direction of the apartment building on a two meter high hill. The remains of the keep reach a height of 8.26 meters outside and 10.26 meters inside. Between the bricks, the dimensions of which vary between 28 × 14 × 9.5 cm and 30 × 14 × 9 cm, field stones of various sizes were built into the outer walls. The masonry was given a wall thickness of sometimes over two meters. The lower rooms of the keep probably served as storage. As is usually the case, access to the keep was a few meters above the ground via a ladder. The diameter of the tower was about 3.40 meters. Adjacent to the tower was the residential and farm building, of which only the foundations are left. The castle was surrounded by a curtain wall and a wide moat. To the south of this main castle there was an outer bailey in which there were still smaller farm buildings.

The noble von Hobe family, who were also in the neighboring towns of Quitzenow , Groß - and Klein Methling in addition to Wasdow , remained the owners of the goods until 1779. In that year, Klein Methling was sold to the Duke of Mecklenburg and thus became a domain, while the Goods Quitzenow, Bobbin and Wasdow came into the hands of the Blücher family . Wasdow had to be sold again in 1895, the other two goods remained in the possession of von Blücher until the Second World War. More detailed information about the later history of the castle is missing, on the Schmettauschen directorial survey map only the keep is shown.
