The Lazarettfriedhof Saalow is a war cemetery in Saalow , a district of the municipal Am Mellensee in the Teltow-Fläming district in Brandenburg .

Background and story

The cemetery was created in the last days of the Second World War in May 1945. At that time, there was a military hospital of the Luftwaffe on the opposite side of the street in Saalow . Soldiers who died there could no longer be returned to their hometowns due to the destroyed infrastructure . Up to November of that year, 331 German Wehrmacht soldiers were buried on the site. After the end of the fighting, the community set up a resettlement hospital in the military hospital to care for refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich . Of them , a total of 702 people died in the period from October 1945 to the deadline of the Graves Act , March 31, 1952, who were also buried on the site.

In 2000 the community repaired the cemetery.

construction

The cemetery can be entered through an entrance from the Horstweg . It is divided into two areas by a central axis, each with eight birch trees lining an avenue. It leads to a central, stone and simply kept high cross . To the left of the avenue is the cemetery for refugees and displaced persons. It is arranged in two parallel rows with 14 collective graves each. The burial took place in chronological order from the street side in the direction of Hochkreuz. Since there was not enough space, more dead were buried on the right rear side of the cemetery. The area on the right of the access road serves as a burial ground for members of the Wehrmacht. In front of the cross there is a memorial plaque with the inscription: “1033 victims of World War II 1939–1945, who died in the Saalow hospital, rest in this cemetery. 331 soldiers succumbed to their serious wounds between May and November 1945. 702 refugees, resettlers and expellees died between October 1945 and March 1952. "Below the inscription is a quote from Theodor Heuss :" You, who are still alive, see to it Peace remain - peace between people, peace between peoples! ”.
