Again over dolmens

The Wied Znuber Dolmen is located in the dry valley of the same name (Maltes. Wied ) near Ħal-Far on the island of Malta .

The dolmen is located on the west side of the south-running gorge, in the south of the former airfield of Ħal-Far, on which there is now an industrial area. In Maltese, dolmens are called l-imsaqqfa (with a roof). They consist of a roughly hewn capstone, which is supported on two or three sides by supporting stones, which mostly stand on one of their long narrow sides. The bedrock is worked out under the middle, so that a pit up to 60 cm deep was created. The dolmens were used as burial sites (for cremation graves). The megalithic systems date from the early Bronze Age "Tarxien Cemetery phase" (2500–1500 BC). The closest parallels can be found in Apulia and Sicily , as far as the simple shape is concerned, on the Golan .

description

The Wied Znuber Dolmen essentially consists of the 3.8 × 1.6 m capstone, on the top of which there is a 1.06 × 0.66 m recess about 5 cm deep. This could be a rock-cut pans of unknown function. There are another six indentations of unknown time, one at each corner and one at the edge of each long side. Under the cover plate the rock was hollowed out to a depth of 0.7 m to form a chamber, which was raised on each narrow side by a 30 cm high block; the capstone rests on this.
