Wienerwald speech

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On November 24, 1976, the regional committee of the Junge Union Bayern met in a meeting room of the headquarters of the Wienerwald group in Munich . Among those present was the then CSU chairman Franz Josef Strauss , who in a heated speech attacked the CDU and its chairman Helmut Kohl with rough formulations ( "He [Helmut Kohl] is totally incapable. He lacks the character, the intellectual and the political prerequisites. He lacks everything for it [for the Chancellery] ” ). The speech was by an unknown recorded and five days later the Mirror published as writing. Soon afterwards it was known as the Wienerwald speech .

Political context

On November 19, 1976, the CSU decided in a meeting in Wildbad Kreuth to separate from the Union sister CDU and to run nationwide (→  Kreuther separation decision ). On November 22nd, the CDU asked its sister party to commit to the Union; otherwise she wanted to found her own regional association in Bavaria . On December 12, the CDU and CSU decided to continue appearing as a joint parliamentary group in the future.

The audio recording

A 45-minute recording is known of Strauss's three-hour speech.

Excerpts from the recording were sold on cassettes for five DM by the Munich librarian and board member of the SPD-Südbayern, Jürgen Heckel , until Strauss enforced a confiscation due to § 201 StGB (" violation of the confidentiality of the word ") in November 1982 .

Quotes

“When a pensioner goes for a walk with five dachshunds, one of them lifts his leg, the other runs after the tip of the sausage, the third disappears into the canteen, the fourth goes to sleep in the ditch, and the fifth howls through the area. And when you then ask him: Yes, what's going on? He says: Yes, that's my management style. "

- Franz Josef Strauss : so-called Wienerwald speech , November 24, 1976

Helmut Kohl will never become chancellor. At the age of 90 he will write the memoirs: 'I was a candidate for chancellor for 40 years; Lessons and experiences from a bitter era '. Maybe the last chapter was written in Siberia or where. "

- Franz Josef Strauss : so-called Wienerwald speech , November 24, 1976

"The political pygmies of the CDU, who only fear for their constituencies, these pocket-sized dwarfs, this Reclam edition of politicians."

reception

“After all, in his famous Wienerwald speech in 1976 , Strauss Kohl denied the ability to be chancellor. 'Kohl is totally incapable', those were his words. And with all due respect: with the help of the good Bavarian election results, Kohl was Federal Chancellor for 16 years. "

- Edmund Stoiber : Interview with Der Spiegel on November 9, 2008
