The Wiesenbrücke in Schopfheim is a road bridge built in 1911/1912 over the river Wiese . Despite its comparatively short length of 40 meters, it is considered to be an exceptional engineering achievement of its time due to its design.

history

After a wooden bridge with three arched fields had stood for many years between Schopfheim and the city forest on Entegast Mountain and this was repeatedly damaged by floods in 1907, the local council decided to build a new bridge made of concrete . The engineer Friedländer from Freiburg office Brenzinger & Cie. on. Due to the good foundation possibilities on the bank, a very shallow arch was chosen. It was carried out in the years 1911 to 1912. Over the years, corrosion damage to the reinforcement occurred because insufficient concrete cover had been selected. After an improper renovation in the 1960s, the building was in a very poor condition in the 1990s, so that it had to be fundamentally renovated between 1994 and 1995. After Fritz Leonhardt had classified the bridge as a special engineering achievement and thus a monument worth preserving , the State Monuments Office granted a grant for the renovation measures.

Location and description

The bridge west of the center of Schopfheim crosses the meadow, which is rather shallow in this section, from north to south. The Hebel hiking trail runs over the meadow bridge, on the bank of which there is a station.

The approximately 40 meter long bridge is 5.60 meters wide and about four meters high. The main girder is a two-hinged arch made of reinforced concrete, which is raised in the middle as a parapet over the roadway. With a span of 34.80 meters, the arch has a height of 2.40 meters, which is unusual even by modern standards. In order to avoid bending forces, joints made of concrete were used on the fighters . These have a spiral reinforcement, which was new for the time. The road is of dreistegigen -beams supported by transverse ribs, which lie between the main beams. On the right bank of the river in the direction of the river, the bridge is widened on both sides for better traffic management.

While the right bank is dominated by rocks and provides the bridge with sufficient support, the foundations on the left bank had to be made 9.50 meters below the roadway profile and thus three meters lower than planned. The sole was designed in a sawtooth shape for a secure foundation.
