Wikana biscuits intended for maneuvering in the NVA

The Wikana biscuit and food GmbH is an existing cookie factory since 1906 from Wittenberg . Wikana produced particularly in the former East Germany popular products such as sandwich cookies Wickies , Vikings and Winner and Luther Brodt and Othello biscuits . This has it z. Some already existed in GDR times.

In 1906 the company was founded in Wittenberg as Kant Chokoladenfabrik AG . Production was stopped during the Second World War, but resumed at the old location after the war. In 1950 the company Nadena was incorporated. In 1953 the company was nationalized as VEB confectionery factory Nadena Kant . The name Wikana, which has been in use since 1954, is derived from Wittenberg, Kant and Nadena.

A total of 5000 tons of baked goods are produced each year. The company is the only manufacturer in the new federal states that also fills biscuits. In 2006 the company had a turnover of eight million euros with a total of 36 varieties. In 2014 the turnover was 16.6 million euros with 120 varieties (50 of which were from Wikana)

Wikana was the second largest biscuit factory in the GDR and in 1989 employed around 500 people. With the collapse of the GDR , the company lost most of its sales market due to the loss of its largest customer, the NVA (long-life baked goods for storage and maneuvering stocks) - but also due to strong West German competition - and was about to close. From 1992 the company was rebuilt with initially 20 former employees. From state and EU funds, three million euros have been invested in new production facilities, including a so-called sandwich system that can inject fillings between biscuits. There are currently 120 employees at Wikana (as of 2014).
